ATTN: drawing infidels - a link you might should find useful: some classic books on figure drawing, with handy download links.

Inside: SFW pin-up.

I think it was one of the warmest Thanksgivings ever. Kind of humid, actually which is weird.

Crikey, my nephews are getting loud. Nephew #1 seems to think talking means shouting as loud as possible. Nephew #2, not quite talking yet but not to be outdone, loves pulling those springy door-stopper things that go booiiiiiiiiingggg. #2 follows #1 around like he's a god or something.

A slightly stylized drawing. Since I've been doing a lot of life drawing lately, I think I should have a rule that if I'm going to use photo reference, I should be as non-literal as I can manage.

The trick I have yet to master is to do it with any kind of reliability...

It's just a prop cigarette.

just let her know that I will not have a long term relationship with a smoker.

That dude already blames me for everything by MohammedNiyalSayeed (4.00 / 2) #11 Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 06:33:06 PM EST

What's another thing? To a dude with no conscience, not much, really.

You can build the most elegant fountain in the world, but eventually a winged rat will be using it as a drinking bowl.

It's a /healthy/ cigarette. by wiredog (4.00 / 3) #5 Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 03:23:13 PM EST
It's "herbal".

fantastic I shall definitely be examining those later.

Picture - I love this one, shows what can be done with a few lines provided they are the right lines. Her face especially carries so much with only a few strokes!

Rock Hard Abs are just a sw-sw-swivel away!

It is a bit cartoon-y. The mind does a great job of "filling in" the details when it's looking at a simplified drawing.

Critique by Breaker (4.00 / 1) #10 Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 05:53:40 PM EST
From a non art infidel...

Knee - too angular, as is the arm too tubular.  And the ciggie is waaaay too fat.  Breasts are a bit Madonna in her machine gun tits phase.

That said, the face, hair and shoes are excellent - in a few lines you've managed to accomplish a lot, visually.

Not trying to be offensive here; it's easy to critique something - a lot harder to actually do something.

Not at all - it's appreciated by spacejack (2.00 / 0) #12 Tue Oct 09, 2007 at 07:05:09 PM EST
And it helps. I think another thing is that her forearm is too long, making her other body parts look too short. And I didn't find a satisfying placement for her hand, which is a bit puffy.

I shouldn't have worried then! by Breaker (4.00 / 1) #13 Wed Oct 10, 2007 at 06:07:44 AM EST
Clearly you're a harder judge on your work than I!

Those were the only things that were bugging me... before others pointed out the other problems :)

Looking back over it by ObviousTroll (4.00 / 1) #14 Wed Oct 10, 2007 at 07:49:54 AM EST
I do think that her elbow and knee are both too "thin" for the forearm and calf. In each case, I suspect simply making the lower end of the upper arm/leg just a bit wider would solve the problem.

oh! the dreaded Scrawn-Arm by misslake (2.00 / 0) #16 Thu Oct 11, 2007 at 08:00:29 AM EST
i had an art teacher in highschool who always nit picked about the Scrawn-Arm in figure drawings.

Oh, I think it's a great pic by ObviousTroll (4.00 / 1) #17 Thu Oct 11, 2007 at 09:13:04 AM EST
I didn't really even think about what might be wrong about it till SJ said he wanted criticism.

One of the things I absolutely hate about Photographica or Deviant Art is you never get constructive criticism. People may praise you, or they may ignore you, but you'll never hear "you know, that pic would look a lot better if you tightened the cropping" or "have you considered cutting back on the saturation?"
